“January 1996. abs-cbn conferred me the LOYALTY & LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD.
The citation was for my dedicated 24/7 service to the Network as writer, deskman, reporter, program presenter, executive producer, supervising producer, news director and the network representative to various national, regional and international fora and award giving bodies.
It was also a recognition of my sacrifices during the series of Coup de Etat, the Cabanatuan-Baguio tragedy, the mount pinatubo eruption, the 7 months long Marcos Trial in New York, my personal assistance in the establishment of the abs-cbn foundation and my pioneering television continuing news presentation – my brainchild: TV Patrol.
It was a recognition not only of decade long stint with the network, but also my 25 years in the industry at that time.
I was called to the podium to accept the award like this: Ladies and gentlemen, our “Kapamilya,” Mr. Jay Sonza. This was the first time the word “kapamilya” was ever uttered in the four corners of ABS-CBN Broadcast Centre.
A few days after, they illegally dismissed one of my managed professionals and radio & TV program Mel & Jay co-presenter, rendering me professionally and economically displaced and gagged.
Not content with that, three (3) months after, they sued me before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court and sought for a P300 million damages.
Not happy still, they prevented me from seeking employment elsewhere by filing a Temporary Restraining Order.
They likewise sought a Permanent Injunction against me and my future employer, GMA Network Inc.
The latter happened 24 years ago on this very day. By God’s grace, the injunction was lifted, they eventually lost the case.” sabi ni Sonza.
