#OpenLetter|UK national reveals to His Holiness Pope Francis regarding Catholic Bishops & priests in PH endorsing a presidential candidate

An open letter addressed to His Holiness Pope Francis, seeking his guidance and thoughts regarding some Bishops and priests of the Catholic Church who are openly supporting a particular candidate or political party in the forthcoming Philippine election.

Malcolm Conlan, a UK national but Pinoy-ay-heart, remarked that as a Christian himself, the duty and responsibility of Christians is to pray for their elected leaders. But there was a time when he recalled a Catholic priest in the Philippines joked from the pulpit about praying for the President of the Philippines to get sick. He can’t help but wonder where in the Holy Bible it says such frivolity is allowed?

Furthermore, Conlan also wants His Holiness to comment on reports that some Catholic churches in the Philippines are used as venues for political activities which he found strange because as far as he is concerned, the House of God is a place for prayer, ministry and preaching of the word of God only.

And lastly, Conlan wants His Holiness to comment on news report that many priests and Bishops are openly endorsing the candidacy one particular candidate while majority of Catholics are supporting other presidentiables in the forthcoming election.

You may now read Malcolm Conlan’s open letter to His Holiness and don’t forget to share if you agree with Conlan.

An Open letter to His Holiness Pope Francis,

The Vatican

Your Holiness,

I hope you don’t mind and with the greatest respect and humility as a practicing Christian but also to those who are of the catholic faith, I just wanted to seek your guidance and thoughts on whether or not it’s right for any priest or bishops of the Catholic Church in the Philippines to support a particular candidate or political party in any election?

As far as I understood, it is the duty and responsibility of Christians to pray for their elected leaders? There was even a time where a certain catholic priest in the Philippines had joked from the pulpit about praying for the President of the Republic of Philippines to get sick? I wonder where in the Holy Bible it allows for such frivolity over such important responsibilities of Christians?

I also question and ask whether the House of the Lord should be a place where any political activities take place, I thought the House of God was a place for prayer, ministry and preaching of the word of God only and not to display any particular political colours?

I am just worried that from what I have seen online and through various legitimate media sources in the Philippines (I have checked this) that the stance of many of the priests and bishops in Catholic Church in the Philippines is to support the candidacy of the current Vice President of the Philippines, Ma’am Leni, despite the fact there will be many catholics in the Philippines who are supporting the candidacy of other Presidentiables running in the forthcoming elections.

Is this fair or impartial or indeed apolitical, which I expected the catholic church to be?

I seek your guidance according to the scriptures and rules of the Catholic Church?

Thank you Your Holiness,

With much respect

Malcolm Conlan, London UK
