This is the emphatic reaction of international relations expert Sass Rogando Sasot to the unsolicited lecture handed by a certain Benjamin Vallejo Jr to VP Leni Robredo in the wake of her statement that the AFP is an independent institution.
According to Vallejo, the AFP is not independent as Robredo wants the public to believe because it has to follow legit orders of the Executive as it upholds the civilian authority.
Vallejo lamented that the VP doesn’t have a clear idea on what role the military is in a constitutional democracy. He said Robredo’s line of thinking the AFP is an independent branch of government is dangerous to democracy.
As of this writing, Sasot’s FB post elicited 9,100+ reactions, 973 comments and 1,100+ shares in just 4 hours and counting.
Netizens who stumbled upon Sasot’s FB post joined her in castigating Robredo.
What kind of a lawyer is she. Never is the AFP an independent institution as it bows to the civilian authority as enshrined in the constitution. Baka apolitical or non-partisan ang ibig mong sabihin hahaha…
If the AFP is independent then it can independently stage a coup and instill a military junta eliminating any constitution. This is why babbling just to say words makes her asinine and overly moronic. #fail
It is very elementary that the AFP is under the direct control of the President being its Commander-in-Chief which makes Du30 or any President for that matter on top of the chain of command. But here she is suggesting the AFP to be an independent agency of government, therefore insinuating that it can oppose or stand in the way of any decision of the President if it so whishes? That’s a very dangerous mindset, and a real threat to a democratic system in which the present Constitution, though riddled with many loopholes, was framed upon. Forever clueless this lugaw has been… watttajowk!!!

The President is the Commander in Chief of the Military. When you become President the constitution grants you sole and exclusive authority over the Military. No one have this mandate. Not the Congress not the Judiciary. It is not independent. It is directly under the command of the President. If Leni becomes President and she allows the Military to do what it pleases citing her ignorance of the Constitution then there might be discord and every General might stage an open rebellion and if successful we will have a Military government which happened in Thailand. Except in thailand they have a King which holds all subjects including the Military accountable.
